Jacqui Spicer, President, Baker CollegeWhitney’s journey in education is rooted in the arts and humanities. A classically trained pianist since the age of three, he developed early as both a practitioner and scholar of music and theatre. Guided by a mentor during his undergraduate years, Whitney discovered the power of the arts to foster healing, elevate underheard voices and bring communities together—an experience that shaped his commitment to experiential learning and community impact.
Reimagining Higher Education in an Era of Disruption
Higher education stands at a pivotal moment in its history. Colleges and universities drive opportunity, innovation and civic engagement in communities worldwide. They prepare students for meaningful careers, cultivate critical thinking and contribute to the economic and social vitality of society. Today, however, institutions face a rapidly evolving environment shaped by demographic shifts, rising costs, changing expectations about the value of a degree and the accelerating influence of transformative technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Several forces now reshape how institutions operate and how students access learning. The rising cost of attending college places real financial strain on many families and increases public scrutiny about the value of higher education. At the same time, declining birth rates in many regions reduce the number of traditional college-aged students. Institutions must therefore expand their reach to serve a broader population, including adult learners, working professionals and individuals seeking new skills throughout their careers. Students and families also expect clearer connections between academic programs and career opportunities, reinforcing the importance of developing graduates who combine professional readiness with strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
“Institutions that expand access, embrace responsible innovation and place student success at the center of their work will continue to serve as engines of opportunity and progress.”
Rapid technological advancement, particularly the emergence of artificial intelligence, adds another layer of transformation. AI continues to reshape industries, redefine workplace expectations and influence how knowledge develops and spreads. Colleges and universities must address the implications of these technologies while embracing the opportunities they create. Artificial intelligence can strengthen advising, personalize learning, improve operational efficiency and expand access through innovative digital platforms. At the same time, institutions must guide students in using these technologies responsibly and ethically while preserving the intellectual rigor and human engagement that define a meaningful educational experience.
Despite the challenges facing higher education, I remain confident in the enduring power of its mission. Institutions that expand access, embrace responsible innovation and place student success at the center of their work will continue to serve as engines of opportunity and progress. By combining the timeless values of higher education with forward-looking leadership, colleges and universities will prepare students not only for today's careers but also for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
The Expanding Mandate of the Modern College President
These forces also reshape the role of the college president. Historically, presidents focused primarily on academic leadership, institutional stewardship and external representation. Those responsibilities remain central, but today’s presidents must also navigate a far more complex environment, including financial pressures, demographic change, technological transformation and heightened public scrutiny. Modern presidents serve as strategic leaders who align mission, operations and innovation while guiding institutions through enrollment challenges, evolving workforce demands and shifting expectations about the value of higher education. They must engage a wide range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, policymakers, alums, industry partners and community leaders, while maintaining a clear focus on student success and institutional sustainability.
Bridging Strategy, Operations and Digital Innovation
My perspective on these challenges reflects my leadership experience as both a Chief Information Officer and Chief Operating Officer in roles within and beyond higher education. Those positions required me to align strategy, operations and technology while guiding organizations through periods of significant change. That experience continues to shape my approach as a college president. It reinforces the importance of building institutions that remain grounded in their academic mission while embracing innovation and adapting to emerging realities.
My background in technology leadership also provides an important advantage as institutions navigate the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and other digital tools. A technology-forward mindset allows us to evaluate and adopt emerging innovations quickly and responsibly. When institutions integrate new technologies thoughtfully, they improve operational efficiency, strengthen support for faculty and staff and enhance the learning environment for students. More importantly, they ensure that graduates develop the technological fluency, adaptability and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing workforce.
Leadership Rooted in Trust and Intellectual Curiosity
Professionals who aspire to executive leadership roles can draw several lessons from these transformations. Leadership begins with a clear sense of purpose and a commitment to the mission of the organization. Effective leaders cultivate intellectual curiosity, practice critical thinking and remain open to new ideas. They also recognize that leadership ultimately centers on people. Strong executives build trust, develop collaborative teams and create environments where colleagues feel empowered to innovate and contribute.
