Tyler Samstag directs instructional innovation at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and Remake Learning, a network that ignites engaging, relevant, and equitable learning methods to help young people navigate rapid social and technical change.In New York City, Tyler taught special education and implemented literacy interventions in juvenile detention facilities and residential psychiatric hospitals. Later, while living in Boston, Tyler interned with the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), a nonprofit education R&D organization that uses Universal Design for Learning to expand learning opportunities for all, and was a member of the IDEO Bits + Blocks LAB at the Harvard Innovation Lab, which develops new ventures using Bitcoin and blockchain technologies.

What are the major challenges faced by educational institutions, educators, and learners?

The impact of technology have created the most pressing problems in the education sector, particularly in terms of SEL (Social and Emotional Learning). The exponential growth of technology, exemplified by the introduction of the iPhone fifteen years ago, has had a significant impact on how people learn and navigate the world. This consistent change necessitates that educators continually reevaluate their instructional strategies and adapt to new tools and resources.

Nevertheless, despite technological advancements, many education systems have remained unchanged for centuries. Traditional structures persist, with pupils advancing through subjects and being evaluated on the basis of knowledge acquisition rather than application. This emphasis on accumulating knowledge without sufficient emphasis on its practical application makes it difficult to meet the evolving demands of the labor force.

Technological advancements are playing a crucial role in reshaping the educational landscape. One of the leading trends in education is personalized learning, facilitated by technology. It allows for tailored instruction and flexible learning spaces, recognizing that not all students learn in the same way. Furthermore, technology provides a variety of venues and modes for students to engage in learning, increasing student agency and choice. Another significant shift is the shift toward an ecosystemic approach to education, which acknowledges that children learn outside of the classroom and in their daily lives. This broader perspective attempts to credit and value learning that occurs outside of traditional classroom contexts. Also, teacher professional development is changing, moving away from one-time training and toward more long-term and mixed methods. Technology allows for ongoing help and guidance, which leads to better results. Lastly, changes in technology have made it easier for students with special needs to get an education. Tools like text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and translation apps have broken down barriers and made it easier for students to access and interact with material. These changes make it possible for education to be more fun and open to everyone.

Could you please elaborate on your leadership strategy or methodology in guiding your team through new endeavors?

The leadership strategy implemented in Pittsburgh revolves around the concept of an ecosystem of learning organizations, aiming to foster innovation and collaboration. It is guided by the five Cs: communicate, convene, coordinate, catalyze, and celebrate. Communication is prioritized to break down barriers within and between organizations, utilizing centralized platforms to broadcast learning opportunities. Convening brings together diverse individuals, fostering ambitious thinking and exploring innovative educational possibilities. Coordination enables collaboration among stakeholders, leveraging their expertise to create innovative learning opportunities. Catalytic grants and funding support the testing and implementation of ideas, ranging from small-scale pilots to larger initiatives. Lastly, celebrating success and sharing innovative projects inspire replication and further innovation. Through these strategies, Pittsburgh's leadership approach nurtures a thriving ecosystem that drives transformative learning experiences in the region.

How do you envision the future of the space?

The concept of learning ecosystems will acquire significant prominence in the education industry in the future. This requires a transition toward increased connectivity and collaboration between diverse educational institutions and organizations. Instead of being limited to traditional educational settings, learning will be recognized as a multifaceted process that occurs in a variety of contexts. New methods of assessing and recognizing learning, such as badges, credentials, and micro-credentials, will emerge to accommodate this transition. This paradigm shift will dismantle existing educational divisions and foster stronger connections between organizations dedicated to fostering the learning and development of young people. By incorporating the concept of learning ecosystems, the education industry is poised to develop a more holistic and interconnected approach.

What would be your piece of advice for budding professionals in the field?

When it comes to giving advice, I would stress how important it is to keep learning throughout your life. In a world that changes quickly, it's important to always be curious and keep learning new things. Take advantage of ways to improve yourself and your career, such as formal education, online classes, workshops, or self-study. Don't be afraid to try new things and be open to new thoughts and points of view. Remember that learning doesn't have to happen in a classroom; it can happen through events, interactions, and even failures. By committing to learning for the rest of your life, you not only improve your own personal and professional growth, but you also learn to adapt and thrive in a world that is always changing.
