Formative Experiences Shaping Innovation

With over twenty-five years in education technology, I started my work here in Alpine School District as the Director of Innovative Learning. In this role, my approach to driving innovation as director of innovative learning in Alpine School District is shaped by experiences spanning the classroom, district leadership, and systemwide change. I began my career in education as a tutor and teacher passionate about using technology to engage students in meaningful ways. Whether connecting students to real-world audiences through early online tools or guiding multimedia projects, I saw how technology could open doors for learning, creativity, and student voice.

That passion expanded when I became Director of Technology Services in the newly created Canyons School District. Helping launch a new district from the ground up was transformative. It allowed me to shape the technology vision, build infrastructure, design professional learning, and implement tools supporting both teaching and learning. I learned the importance of aligning strategy, systems, and support to ensure innovation thrives.

At Alpine, I’ve focused on building capacity for innovation through coaching, collaboration, and instructional leadership. By supporting educators in exploring new pedagogies and fostering a culture of shared learning, we’ve enabled true instructional transformation.

Implementing Open Education and Social Networks

Open education and the academic use of social networks have long shaped my vision for expanding access to learning and creating collaborative, connected educational experiences. In Alpine School District, these ideas drive innovation, helping us rethink how students and teachers engage with content, each other, and the world beyond the classroom.

Our open education approach empowers educators to curate, adapt, and create high-quality instructional materials that are freely available and tailored to student needs. This shift reduces reliance on traditional textbooks, focusing instead on content that is current, relevant, and personalized. Teachers collaborate across schools to share resources and co-develop lessons, strengthening professional learning communities and ensuring instructional consistency.

We also embrace academic social networking to foster safe, purposeful connections through platforms that support dialogue, global collaboration, and digital citizenship. Scaling personalized, tech-enabled learning across a large, diverse student body brings significant challenges, each requiring thoughtful solutions. A primary challenge is ensuring consistent access, support, and instructional quality across schools with varying readiness, resources, and teacher experience. While technology enables personalization, it also adds complexity when balancing district-wide systems with classroom-level flexibility.

To address this, we prioritize building educator capacity through coaching, collaboration, and aligned professional learning. Innovative Learning Coaches, PLC Coaches, and On-Site Techs play a key role in guiding teachers to integrate technology meaningfully and sustainably. Shared frameworks and exemplars provide direction for deep learning while preserving local innovation. This balance supports effective scaling while honoring teachers’ creativity and professional judgment.

Another challenge is ensuring technology systems genuinely enhance learning rather than add unnecessary tools. We’ve streamlined platforms, improved interoperability, and developed user-friendly systems to keep the focus on instruction and student engagement. Continuous feedback from schools keeps our work responsive and grounded in real needs.

Ultimately, we lead with learning. Technology works best when paired with strong relationships, thoughtful design, and a shared commitment to every student’s success. With this vision, we are creating personalized, engaging, and future-ready learning environments across the district.

Empowering Leaders in a Changing Learning Landscape

In today’s fast-changing ed-tech landscape, several innovations are poised to transform K-12 learning over the next five years. One of the most impactful is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. AI-powered tools are reshaping assessment, feedback, and content delivery. When thoughtfully implemented, these tools can personalize learning pathways, provide real-time insights into student progress, and give teachers more time to focus on relationships and deeper instructional planning.

Another major trend is the growing emphasis on learner agency and designing student-driven experiences. Tools supporting project-based learning, authentic assessment, and digital portfolios are gaining traction as schools move beyond standardized approaches to foster skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. In our district, students are already leveraging digital tools to document growth, lead conferences, and share learning with authentic audiences.

Additionally, integrating interoperable systems and data dashboards is helping schools build cohesive, efficient ecosystems. When platforms communicate and present actionable insights, educators and students benefit from it. This advantage is why our district prioritizes district-supported solutions—ensuring tools are practical and that they support streamlined, coherent environments both individually and collectively.

Ultimately, the most transformative innovations will elevate both human and digital dimensions of learning, empowering teachers, engaging students, and creating flexible, future-ready education systems. For emerging education leaders seeking to champion innovation in large public school systems, my first advice is to lead with learning. Innovation should focus on creating conditions for deeper, more meaningful learning—not chasing the newest technology. Always ask how a strategy or tool supports student growth, builds teacher capacity, and drives long-term success.

Value relationships and systems. Sustainable change requires collaboration, not isolated efforts—partner with instructional leaders, IT teams, and educators. Listen, co-design solutions, and establish structures like coaching models and aligned professional learning to help innovation take root.

Also, communicate a clear vision. In complex systems, clarity and coherence—not the number of initiatives—determine success. Use frameworks such as the Alpine Vision for Learning to align resources and reduce confusion.

Finally, stay curious and adaptable. Education is constantly evolving; leaders must evolve too. Stay connected to classrooms, embrace diverse perspectives, and learn with your team.
